Known as the City of Lakes, Bhopal—the capital of Madhya Pradesh—was founded by Raja Bhoj in the 11th century. The city and its surroundings are home to around 17 lakes, architectural masterpieces, and picturesque landscapes. To safeguard the eastern flank of his kingdom, the Malwa ruler created a central lake around which the city flourished.
Bhopal offers a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. The old city’s meandering lanes, mosques, and bustling bazaars stand in contrast to the newer part of town, which boasts modern shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and resorts. Despite rapid urban development, the city’s Nawabi charm and culture continue to shine through.
A quick guide to what you can do in Bhopal, to name a few.
Bhimbetka
Visit the Bheem Baitka rock shelters, an archaeological site that represents the Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and historic periods of the area. It is exciting to witness the earliest traces of human life, even from the Stone Age during the Acheulean period. There are around 750 prehistoric rock shelters that tell the story of human civilization.
Taj-ul-Masjid
Looking just like the Jama Masjid in New Delhi, Taj-ul-Masjid has a pink façade. It is the second-largest mosque in Asia and the largest in India. Its construction began in 1877 CE by Shah Jehan Begum, but was stopped due to a lack of funds. Thereafter, in 1971, construction resumed, and you can visualize two small minarets, three big marble domes, large arched entrance doors, and spacious, extended marble floors. The designs and carvings are exquisite and ornate.
Van Vihar National Park
Located close to Bada Talab, the urban Van Vihar National Park is known for its diverse flora and fauna. The blend of mixed plantations, bamboo vegetation, and grassy plateaus is a sight to behold. You can also get a view of the entire city of Bhopal from Van Vihar.
